Some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Senior Pictures
How much do senior portraits cost in Santa Barbara?
Current industry rates as of 2026 for Montecito and Santa Barbara senior pictures are between $400 and $1250, with some photographers requiring additional fees per image download or requiring print orders as part of their graduation picture collections.
My senior portrait sessions start at $595 and include a pre-session consultation, a one-hour outdoor shoot at a location of your choice, and a private online gallery with fully edited, high-resolution images delivered within two weeks. Every image in your gallery is yours to keep — no separate digital file fees, no upsell to unlock your own photos. For seniors who want a more extensive session with multiple outfit changes, multiple locations, or wall art and album packages, I offer custom pricing based on what you’re looking to create. The investment is designed to be straightforward — one session fee, everything included.
Where are the best locations for senior portraits in Santa Barbara?
Santa Barbara offers some of the most varied and visually compelling backdrops for senior portraits anywhere in California. My most-requested locations include the Henley Gate (of course) but also the cliffs and paths near the UCSB campus, the library, various fun hang-out places in Isla Vista including Freebirds and other spots including the Campus Lagoon and Ellwood Bluffs — for graduating seniors who want their portraits somewhere other than the mob scene at the college entrance. For seniors based in Montecito or Carpinteria, we sometimes hit the Westmont observatory or gardens, the bluffs and private gardens around there as well as the chapel at Westmont. There are also great locations on the SBCC campus for City College senior sessions. During our pre-session consultation, we’ll choose the location that fits your personality, your style, and the story you want to tell.
What should I wear for senior portrait photos?
The most important thing is to wear something that feels genuinely like you — not a costume, not what you think you’re supposed to wear or what all the other sorority sisters are wearing.
In general, the cap and gown of course covers/nullifies whatever you are wearing and just looks like a big tent or blanket, so we bring some clothing clips to give it a tailored shape and some flattering form and use any ocean breeze very strategically. Then you can do some fun photos without the gown, using just the graduation cap and sash and normal clothes. For some reason all the girls lately have been wearing cream sleeveless short dresses but there are lots of other things you can wear including these ideas:
- Beachwear and flips just for fun
- Jeans and a hoodie or t-shirt
- Business casual blouse for LinkedIN photos and job searching
- One dress with sleeves
- Athletic and/or costume for hobbies or passions
- Consider warm/advancing colors for greenery backgrounds. Think pastels and ivories, corals, pinks, salmons
- If you want to accessorize with a favorite hat or sunglasses. These are fun to do at the end so they don’t smoosh your hair or leave a mark on your face.Avoid patterns and sleeveless. Avoid anything puffy or ruffly or with metallic rivets or shiny things. Go with solid colors, ideally in colors that are flattering to your skin tones and not pure white or pure black.
For outdoor senior photo sessions in Santa Barbara, earthy neutrals (cream, tan, sage, warm white, navy) work beautifully against the natural landscape and age well in prints. Avoid neon colors and anything with large text. I send every senior a detailed style guide before their session with specific outfit suggestions, color palette ideas, and a list of what to avoid.
When should I book my senior portrait session?
Once spring forward daylight savings time hits is ideal! For UCSB and SBCC graduation portraits, the most popular booking window is March through May — those dates fill up fast as graduation season approaches, and the spring light in Santa Barbara is exceptional. For high school seniors, the most popular window is September through November of senior year, which gives you time to use the photos for college applications, yearbook submissions, and something for mom for holiday cards. Santa Barbara’s climate means senior portraits look great year-round — the winter light is clean and directional, the summer evenings are warm and golden and long, and spring adds green and colorful flowers and trees. If you’re planning a graduation session specifically, I’d recommend booking at least six to eight weeks in advance to secure your preferred date and time. Golden-hour slots — roughly 60 minutes before sunset — are the first to go.
Can my parents attend the senior portrait session?
Sure, celebrating this milestone is a team event and if your folks are here for commencement or live here already, they can definitely jump in. and many do. I typically start with the individual senior portraits first while energy is high and the clothing etc is fresh, then bring family members in for a handful of full family and sibling photos toward the end of the session. Sometimes people bring boyfriends and girlfriends and members of their fur family (small dogs) too.
